Sculpture by the Sea 2003

I had been photographing 50's and 60's style garage doors for a while and was accepted into Sculpture by the Sea 2003 with a proposal for a series of small scale replicas.

The pictures here are a selection of the real life doors which inspired the copies. I named them all for cataloguing purposes as well as to bond with them whilst I made them. It would be a shame to see these doors disappear from our suburbs, as they are a testament to the proud homeowners of the 50’s and 60’s who were often the artists/craftspeople who made them.

Many of the doors are now hung in a playground within the Deaf and Blind school at North Rocks.

1 Tank-Top

Who didn’t have a Tank-Top or a knitted vest that looked like this? A product of Carlingford.

2 Chest of Drawers

A funky garage in what used to be a very 70’s cul-de-sac in Turramurra.

3 Cut Lunch

Another Carlingford door. I’ve painted it in a green fantasy scheme.

4 Jeff

I asked my 14 year old nephew to name this one ... hmmm. I’ve used a colour combination seen in a similar door. It’s in Epping.

5 Olympia (Ace of Diamonds)

I asked permission to photograph this and was refused. I took the photo anyway. I figured that if it can be seen from the street ... how could I resist? It’s a classic.

6 Twiggy

This was the door that started me off. I imagined a 60’s fashion shoot in front of it, hence the name. It’s actually a twin, so the effect in real life is twice as good.

7 Yahtzee

I absolutely love this door. Carlingford again. Its owner was completely bemused at my wanting to take its picture. She didn’t think it was particularly special.

8 Speedo

This door is appropriately next door to Epping Aquatic centre. Surely the Speedo logo isn’t a coincidence. A nice reference to its location. It needs repainting.

9 White Webbing

Another favourite from the depths of Carlingford.

10 Surfside

I painted this blue because I felt the three birds needed to be flying.

11 Bikini

This door is on a weatherboard holiday house in Hat Head. The yellow inside the diamonds matches the house.

12 Sayonara

Gracing Campbell Parade, this door is one of two identical sailing boats. A very fitting nautical theme for Bondi.

13 Anointy Pointy

Oh pointy birds oh pointy pointy ... Anoint my head, anointy nointy. This door is in Epping.

14 Quadraphonic

This door is in Carlingford. I took some artistic licence and coloured it in.

15 Green Hornet

This garage reminds me of a superhero mask. I’m sure there was one called the Green Hornet. If there wasn’t, there should have been.

16 Mantis

This door reminds me of the head of a praying mantis. I love the simplicity of it.

17 Etch-a-Sketch

A North Rocks extra wide garage.

18 Venn diagram

A garage in the neatest street in Epping. A beautiful diamond display.

19 TCN Nine

Reminds me of the Channel Nine logo. I’ve given it a mission brown treatment.

20 Third Eye

This would have to be one of the more unusual designs I’ve seen. It looks upside down to me. I found out that the owner did this himself.
